JUDITH TREGER SHELTON,
head of the insurance coverage litigation practice group, manages a
group of attorneys dedicated to sophisticated advocacy. For the past 20
years, Judi has represented many regional, national and international
primary and excess insurers in complex coverage disputes and litigation
across the state and the country. She has represented several European
insurance companies on a national basis.
Concentrating
her practice in first and third-party property and casualty coverage
matters in both the personal and commercial context, Ms. Shelton's
focus on insurance law includes the litigation of coverage disputes
involving all manner of construction-related liability, including
additional insured, construction defect and bodily injury issues;
environmental liability; mass and toxic tort; personal and advertising
injury including intellectual property liability involving trademark,
trade dress, patent and copyright issues; professional and officer and
director liability; products liability; first- and third-party auto and
property; E&O coverage; employers' liability; healthcare-related
issues; extracontractual liability and bad faith; arson and fraud; and
excess coverage and reinsurance issues.
Her
representation of our insurance industry clients often also involves
consultation in the effective and appropriate handling of claims
relative to the avoidance of bad faith litigation, underwriting issues
including advice on drafting insurance policies, advice on regulatory
matters, and strategic issues involving dispute resolution and
prevention.
Judi's practice also includes the defense of
professional liability and malpractice claims, insurance and
self-insured defense of complex personal injury litigation, and
construction industry-related contract and commercial disputes. She
frequently counsels both insurers and other corporate clients in the
negotiation, drafting and interpretation of contracts relative to
indemnification and insurance issues.
Ms. Shelton has
frequently lectured and published articles on emerging insurance
coverage and construction issues for a variety of organizations,
including the Defense Research Institute, the New York State Bar
Association, the American Arbitration Association, the Buffalo Claims
Association, Lorman Education Services and the National Business
Institute.
A 1984 graduate of State University of New
York at Buffalo School of Law, Judi received her undergraduate degree,
magna cum laude, from the same institution. She was admitted to the New
York State Bar in 1985, and is also admitted to practice in all United
States District Courts in New York and the Second and Third Circuit
United States Courts of Appeal. She is a member of the American, New
York State and Erie County Bar Associations and the Defense Research
Institute and has a Martindale-Hubbell AV Peer Review Rating.
Outside
the office, when not enjoying her number one priority - her two
wonderful, energetic daughters - Judi's interests center around the
natural world, changing with the seasons. Her gear pile says it all:
skis, snowboard, snowshoes, shovel, kayak paddle, waders, fly rods,
snorkel, tepee, a borrowed saddle, a spare set of tractor keys, even a
small chainsaw.
